From Balrampur to the World: The Inspiring Journey of Shashi Gulati

What does it look like when a woman refuses to let unfulfilled dreams define her, and instead, redefines what is possible at every stage of life? Shashi Gulati's story is exactly that: a deeply human journey of resilience, reinvention, and quiet, powerful service to others.

Roots in UP: A Dream of Becoming a Doctor

Shashi was born in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, and pursued her early education in Bareilly. A science student at heart, her childhood dream was to become a doctor. She appeared for the CPMT entrance examination, the medical entrance test for UP, but did not clear it. Rather than giving up, she channelled her passion for learning into a degree in Sociology, followed by a Master's. She never stopped studying, never stopped growing.

Teaching in Tribal Areas: A Life of Purpose Begins

Before marriage, Shashi took up a teaching position in a tribal area, a bold choice that speaks volumes about the kind of woman she is. She married at 21, moved to Balrampur, and built a family. Today, she is a proud mother of three sons and a grandmother to five grandchildren. But for Shashi, family was never a reason to stop contributing to the world around her.

Inner Wheel Club: Friendship, Service, and a Global Network

Since 1989, Shashi has been an active member of the Inner Wheel Club, a prestigious international organisation present across the world, with a founding motto of friendship and service. Through Inner Wheel, she has travelled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and connected with women and leaders from South Asia, Europe, Africa, and beyond. She is a passionate solo traveller, exploring India and the world with curiosity and courage.

Empowering Girls: Education, Skill Development, and Second Chances

One of Shashi's most inspiring contributions has been her work with school dropout girls. Through her community work and Inner Wheel initiatives, she identified girls who had left school and worked with teachers to prepare them for re-admission into Class 9. She then supported them through to their final year, adding skill development modules,  including embroidery and stitching, so that they could become financially independent.

Her philosophy? "It is better to teach someone to fish than to give them a fish." She helped women set up a fruit processing unit at home, producing pickles and preserves, registered under small-scale industry schemes like Khadi. One elderly woman, who had never imagined earning her own income, became self-sufficient, and for Shashi, that was the greatest reward.

A Day in Her Life: Yoga, Learning, and Giving Back

Shashi begins her mornings with yoga, inspired by Baba Ramdev's teachings, and believes that the learning process is truly lifelong. She actively attends online sessions, stays connected with her community, and continues to participate in social initiatives. Even while managing family responsibilities, including supporting her daughter-in-law during a health challenge, she remains present, engaged, and energised.

Her Message: Keep Learning, Keep Serving

Shashi Gulati's story is a reminder that life's detours can lead to the most meaningful destinations. From a girl who wanted to be a doctor in Bareilly, to a woman who has empowered dozens of girls and women across communities, her journey is a testament to purpose-driven living.
