If you passed Maria D’Costa on the street, you might not notice anything unusual. She describes herself as simple and ordinary. But a short conversation reveals a life shaped by music, quiet determination, and a deep sense of purpose.
A Childhood Rooted in Music
Maria grew up in a home where music was part of everyday life. Her entire family sang, creating an environment that naturally nurtured her love for music. In her twenties, when a teacher began giving keyboard lessons at home, Maria eagerly joined in. Even after the lessons stopped, her connection with music remained strong.
Choosing Hindustani Classical Music
At a time when most people in her Christian community leaned toward Western music, Maria chose a different path. She pursued Hindustani classical music, learning it for five to six years and successfully completing formal examinations. This decision not only strengthened her voice but also expanded her musical versatility.
Singing for Joy, Not Recognition
For Maria, music was never about fame or money. Every Christmas, she led children to sing carols at orphanages and old-age homes. There was no collection box, no expectation, just a desire to spread joy. The smiles she received in return became her greatest reward.
Performing on Big Stages
Maria’s musical journey also took her to some remarkable platforms. As a soprano with the Singspirators Choir, she performed at Mumbai’s prestigious NCPA, preparing months in advance for short but powerful Christmas performances. She later collaborated with the Goan Review Art Foundation (GRAF), performing Konkani songs in around 50 shows across Mumbai. She recorded songs with GRAF and performed on All India Radio Mumbai, along with the members of GRAF.
A Career Built on Independence
Despite her deep love for music, Maria chose a different professional path. She worked as a teacher, typist, secretary, and later was in advertising as well. Her longest role was serving as a secretary to the Managing Director of a Goa-based mining company for 23 years. She handled major responsibilities, including organizing annual exhibitions, and retired at 58.
A strong sense of independence guided her life, she did not depend on others financially, a value she embraced from the age of 15.
Still Singing, Still Growing
Now living in a quiet village in Maharashtra, Maria continues to stay connected with music. She actively participates in online singing platforms, joins discussions, and competes in contests. Recently, she won an all-India singing competition.
She sings in Hindi, Konkani, and English, continuing to find joy in music just as she always has, freely and wholeheartedly.
A Quietly Extraordinary Journey
Maria D’Costa’s story reminds us that passion doesn’t need recognition to be meaningful. Her journey shows that dedication, humility, and love for what you do can create a life that is truly fulfilling.
Sometimes, the most extraordinary stories belong to those who never seek the spotlight.
