Introduction to Mahjong

Mahjong is a tile-based game of skill, observation and just a little bit of luck, and it’s one of the best ways there is to make friends over a table.

This session is led by Shalini Manglani, the heart behind Mahjong World, India’s biggest Mahjong retailer and a tight-knit community of players, along with her daughter Gehna. Together they have taught numerous groups of every age across India.

These sessions have a funny way of making time fly. There are laughs, some friendly competition and plenty of easy conversation, enough to make a room full of strangers feel like old friends.

Over two hours, you will:

1. Get to know the different tile faces

2. Learn about the winds, the dragons and the language of Mahjong

3. Move on to game play, with guidance, so you can try what you’ve learned straight away

New to Mahjong, or a little nervous about learning something new? Here’s what you can expect.

• Never played? Perfect. This session starts at the very beginning. No prior experience is needed.

• Learn at your pace. Shalini and Gehna are experienced teachers who know that every table learns differently.

• Come alone, leave with friends. Most Marzians come solo, and a game that needs a table makes it easy to start talking.

• No pressure to remember everything. The language of Mahjong takes a little time, and you’ll be playing and picking it up as you go.

You’ll leave with a new game you can play for life: the know-how to recognise the tiles, understand the winds and dragons, and sit down at a Mahjong table with confidence.

All it takes is one table, a few tiles and the right company. Reserve your seat and discover why so many people can’t stop playing once they start.
