Let Me Be: A 71-Year-Old’s Honest Take on Ageing with Dignity and Independence

What does ageing on your own terms really look like? In this candid first-person piece, 71-year-old Mohan Krishnan pushes back against the labels, the well-meaning advice, and the assumptions that often come with being called a ‘senior citizen.’ It’s a refreshingly honest reminder that independence, self-expression, and joy don’t have an expiry date, a sentiment that lies at the very heart of the Marzi community for Generation Evergreen.
Let me be…
I am 71. I have a label stuck on me: ‘senior citizen’, a euphemism for 'old man'.
There are so many programs online/offline to make me feel good. Most of them, however, involve dancing, prancing, appearing in costumes that make me look like a clown.
Not to forget, the endless talks that tell me how to take care of my health, my assets, how not to fall victim to online frauds, etc.
The service providers are out to sell me 'schemes', 'pension plans'. If I am not eligible, they suggest I make my grandchild my nominee.
I don't need the myriad para-medical tests.
I have mobility issues; investment in a roomy car and a quality mobility aid is not a waste of money.
I have my share of guilt and hurt. I go into my shell once in a while.
My eyes go moist once in a while; I don't need people to rush to me and tell me to be brave and bold.
At my age, wanting a painless and peaceful exit from this world is not being negative or suicidal.
My joints creak, my back aches, I have problems with incontinence. Everyone and his uncle is out to offer me free advice on how I should learn to adopt/adapt to a changed lifestyle.
I like my ice creams, milkshakes without someone having to frown at me and my indulgence. Hey! I know my limits.
I like to shave daily, change clothes 3 times a day; I like the well-groomed look and look attractive into my 70’s!
I like to sing, crack jokes, say poems. I don't need polite applause and indulgent smiles.
I have young and intelligent women chatting with me and talking to me often.
It need not be frowned upon as old age weakness.
As it is, I have problems walking; don't make me tread on eggshells all the time.
I don't need labels
I don't need to be told what to do and that I should change with the times
I am a conscious being.
I am sharp enough and intelligent enough to take care of myself.
I will reach out when I need help!
So just
“Let me Be!”
