What does it take to rebuild your life from scratch, not once but several times? For Deepa, a Bangalore-based fashion designer and chef, resilience has been the defining thread running through every chapter of her life.
A Creative Spirit Who Chose Her Own Path
Growing up as the youngest of three siblings in Mumbai, Deepa was a lively and mischievous child with little interest in academics but a deep love for art and design. Despite her father’s objections, she left school after Class 10 and enrolled in a fashion designing course in Colaba.
At just 16, she began apprenticing at a prestigious designer boutique in Mumbai, learning the craft from the ground up and discovering the confidence to pursue her dreams.
Building a Fashion Business at Sixteen
Armed with one sewing machine, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit, Deepa started her own tailoring business from her parents’ bedroom. Together with her sister, she distributed handmade business cards to visitors in luxury hotel lobbies across Mumbai.
What began with family and friends soon grew into a thriving customer base that included international clients. Before turning 21, Deepa had already established herself as a successful young entrepreneur.
Love, Marriage, and a New Beginning
At 21, Deepa found herself navigating a difficult chapter. Family expectations led her into an arranged marriage with a Bangalore-based businessman. On the very first night, she openly shared her feelings and circumstances with her husband.
His response changed her life. He offered patience, understanding, and the freedom to choose her own path. Within a few months, their relationship grew into a strong partnership built on trust and respect. Looking back, Deepa considers herself fortunate to have found such unwavering support.
A Boutique Dream Takes Flight
Years later, after becoming a mother, Deepa convinced her husband to let her participate in a fashion exhibition. Alongside her cousin, she created 120 garments for the event.
The response was overwhelming. Nearly every piece sold in a single day. Witnessing her talent firsthand, her husband became her biggest supporter. Encouraged by his faith in herabilities, Deepa opened her own boutique in Sadashivanagar, Bangalore, expanding steadily and creating opportunities for others.
Overcoming Loss and Financial Hardship
In 2006, tragedy struck when her husband passed away suddenly from a massive heart attack. The loss pushed Deepa into severe depression and left her struggling to find direction.
A close friend encouraged her to return to work, and her boutique became both her livelihood and her source of strength. Over the years, she managed family responsibilities, raised two children independently, and faced significant financial setbacks, including losses during the COVID-19 period that wiped out her savings.
Yet each challenge became another opportunity to begin again.
Reinventing Life Through Food, Fashion, and Faith
Today, Deepa’s life reflects the power of reinvention. She starts her day before sunrise with pranayama, yoga, and exercise. Alongside reviving her fashion designing work, she has built a successful career as a chef specializing in high-protein meals and shares her creations online.
Equally important has been her spiritual journey. Guided by the teachings of her Guruji, she has found a sense of peace and purpose that helps her navigate life’s challenges with grace.
Finding Community Through Marzi
Deepa has also found meaningful connections through Marzi, attending community events and engaging with like-minded individuals. Today, she continues to move forward with optimism, caring for her family, her pets, and even stray dogs in her neighborhood.
Her story is a powerful reminder that resilience is not about avoiding hardship. It is about finding the courage to begin again, every single time.
